Communication

Long time no read, huh? I’m afraid so. Guess I was too occupied with my real life, preparations for our summer break, and writing on my German blog. Too many friends complained not being fluent enough in your language in order to follow my writing. On the other hand I thought nothing blog worthy happened in my life to bring it on paper sort of speak… But eventually… here I am again. Glad to be back.

Languages

‘Sibinoen u no sibinoen’ means ‘To be or not to be’… I used to teach ESL/TESOL (for those who don’t know those terms, it means: English second language and Teachers of English for speakers of other languages) and I also know a variety of other languages, plus I’ve heard of ‘Esperanto’ (an international supportive language), but have you EVER heard of ‘Volapuek’? Reverend Johann Martin Schleyer developed this language in 1880 and it had over one million followers worldwide already (!). It was an artificial language, but luckily for us it was just trendy for a decade. One mankind, one language was Schleyer’s motto. It was too difficult to pronounce and too unlogical, even though based on English, French and German. We got lucky that some years later ‘Esperanto’ became accepted as international supportive language instead. My uncle (who was fluent in estimated 17 different languages) and me, the English teacher, are quite happy that yours is that one and only language we should strive to excel in worldwide, shouldn’t we?

Languages and relationships

During my lifetime (and that’s 45 years in the meantime) I’ve come to discover that the male and the female language are quite contrary. To cut right to the chase, without boring you for a whole chapter, I highly recommend the book ‘Men are from Mars, women are from Venus’, by John Gray, Ph.D. This man not just wrote this and many other guidebooks, but also lives by what he preaches for some 25 years already. My late sister once said, comparing me with herself once that we’re like cat and dog. When I purr, she understands it as barking, and vice versa. And this I would like to apply to the relation between men and women. This book my friends helped me a whole lot. I mean I still have a communication problem with my partner, but at least I learned to understand how he ticks. Every time I use what John Gray taught us, it works like a charm… Still, the fundamental base of relationships to me seems communication. None of us can look into the partner’s brain, know what they think, sense what they feel, just TALK, my friends, talk to each other!

Relationships, especially puppy love

I talk, alright. I talk, and write, and think in two languages even. I do all these things towards the wrong people, instead of addressing those who are responsible for how I react. After two divorces I’m still struggling to live by my own experiences and apply what I wrote in my former chapter to my own life! Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’m a great advisor! I’m getting there, eventually. At least I’m going on walks and car rides with my partner nowadays, which makes us talk and guess what? Surprisingly our relationship prospers through this. The most astounded person about that: me, myself and I. I haven’t passed on my insights to my child yet obviously. Her puppy love of two months fell apart just yesterday, and I think that the bottom line problem was lack of communication between the partners. At times I would love to make the youngsters learn from our experiences. I pray her little heart heals quickly and the next partner tries to understand and comfort her better. My mommy’s heart’s bleeding.

Relationships childhood

My data is listed at a classmate’s website online. From time to time old classmates register themselves there, too. But just last week the unthinkable happened and an old childhood friend of mine registered himself at the very elementary school I’ve once went to as well. We discovered one another and came to ‘talk’ via E-Mail. People, this is so cool!!! As if I’ve given back my childhood! I can’t tell you enough how happy I am about this reconnection. Next week we plan on meeting over a cup of coffee even!
In a book about class reunions I’ve once read that these get-togethers are important in order to reflect on our own lives. It is also important to remember things that once were forgotten, things that happened, and to integrate them back into our nowadays’ lives again.
Needless to say that I’m really looking forward to this meeting, isn’t it?
